thoughts from a house full of boys…

Once upon a time I believed gender was a social construct… but along came my two very adorable and completely truck, mud, ball and wrestling obsessed little boys. And I quickly learned that girls and boys are indeed different creatures, without any help from society.

After four years of living in my boy centered world, I find myself standing next to my sons, also staring at little girls like they are from another planet. A planet that I once belonged to and will happily jump at the opportunity to visit any chance I get…

What photos of children on a beach should look like…

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074210005

Today I received my film from our annual family trip to the beach, which included four rolls filled with images of my two boys (ages 3 and 1) and their cousins running on the sand and swimming in the ocean.

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074220001

At the same time I am looking at photos of my three-year-old on the beach, the world is furiously debating a very different photo of a three-year-old boy on the beach: the photograph of Aylan Kurdi’s tiny body in a bright red T-shirt and dark shorts, face-down in the surf.

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074220003

Aylan, his 5-year-old brother, Galip, and mother, Rehan, 35, were among 12 people, including other children, who died after two boats capsized while attempting to flee their war-ravaged homeland, Syria.

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074210003

To hear the little boys’ father talk about what happened in the ocean and how he tried to save his sons is unbearable. I feel a sadness for him I did not know was possible before having my own kids.

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074210001censored

If there is any comfort that can come to the father of Aylan, hopefully it is that because of the photograph of his three-year-old son dead on the beach, the world is now finally paying attention after:

  • four years of armed conflict
  • 200,000 deaths
  • more than 4 million refugees, mostly women and children,
  • and an estimated 12.2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria, including 5.6 million children, according to the UN.

What if the photo of this one sweet boy washed up on the beach can help save the 5.6 million other children who are still living in danger?

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074230010

What if everyone who saw that photo of little Aylan on the beach signed a petition to allow more refugees in their country and sent a donation to nonprofits who are on the ground working to help refugees?

paigegreenBeach09022015-000074230004

So in honor of Aylan Kurdi, I have signed a petition and sent a donation, because I want to live in a world where the only photos of little boys on the beach look like this…paigegreenBeach09022015-000074240006To learn more about how you can help the migrant crisis please click here: http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/28/world/iyw-migrant-how-to-help/

The Opera House…

If you ask me what kind of photography I like best… this photo shoot for The Opera House is my answer…

It was a tad bit crazy, thanks to the Petaluma winds and a slight miscalculation of how much time it would take to transfer an entire store of amazing props to a field.

paigegreenOperaHouse6192015-290

But we managed to pull it off… And once the kids finally arrived, it was so fun to see them grab costumes and scatter into the fields and up the trees. I loved being able to turn in any direction and see kids having fun just being kids… the hardest part was deciding which cute kids to follow.

HUGE thanks: to Kelly Collins Geiser for inviting us to play under the glorious oak trees of her future home; to all our lovely models for coming to play with us; to Terra Livingston and Amber Driscoll, of The Opera House, for providing such a lovely collection of things to photograph; and to Debbie Wilson and her super star helpers, Henry and Lola, for all their hard work.

Happy 2015: Once in a Lifetime…

Well, it’s that time of year again…paigegreen2014paigegreenAOCSF082014-017-1

Meaning it’s time to dig through the memories of last year…

paigegreen2014544A6781

Pull out the highlights…

paigegreen2014000059570002

And make big plans for the coming year…

paigegreen201406042014june_44A0021

Thing is, I have been chasing big plans for the past 15 years…

paigegreen2014IMG_0095

Finding a job turned into building a career…

paigegreen201403022014_44A0019

Six years of saying, “my boyfriend Arann,” turned into five years of saying, “my husband Arann…”

paigepageKellyAaron100514-331

One great dog love was lost and another amazing dog love was found…

paigegreenAOC91414-027

Paying the rent turned into paying the mortgage…

paigegreen2014544A6641

And two people became four…

paigegreen2014IMG_0928

So now that all the important life boxes have been checked…

paigegreen2014000091270010

I have a lot of brain space that is available for rent…

paigegreen2014000083690004

But instead of searching for the next big thing…

paigegreen2014070-maine72-maine000086570004

I would rather slow life down…

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

And celebrate how amazing things are right now…

paigegreen201407202014_44A0092

Because the most important lesson I learned from 2014…

paigegreen2014000059570006

Is that life does not always go as you planned…

paigegreen-maine-000086570001

And it all can change so fast without any warning

480015_10151516369424757_1917589774_n

So in 2015, I am looking for more of this…

paigegreen2014paigegreenAnna110514-050And less of this…

paigegreen2014paigegreenBigFlip-DC102114-0427

Because hopefully there will be more harvests…

paigegreen2014paigegreenDaVero92414-088More drinks…paigegreen2014Paige_Green_Peets_DUO_WIP2_v2_FINAL_Rd1(2)More cook books…breadrevolution2014

More clothes…

And more weddings…paigepageDaniAdam092014-0579

But these two will only be like this…

Once in a Lifetime.

paigegreen2014544A7025

So Happy 2015 (five days late.) Here is to a year of no big plans.

looking for love…

…but we should have been looking for shoes and a jacket, before we impulsively went looking for love…

HAH-314-000083660006

Because it wasn’t until we were halfway to the coast that we realized we didn’t have either of those necessary clothing items for Harper on that rainy Northern California Sunday in March.

000083660003

Luckily his daddy has strong shoulders and his mommy had extra layers to improvise with…

1897857_10152201361600020_1297084527_n

But in the end, our lack of preparedness didn’t matter one bit because, as usual, it all came off anyway…

000083660008

And I swear, that boy has never run so fast or laughed so hard as he did while scampering in his diaper through the forest on that muddy trail. So I don’t think he suffered one bit, and our mission was accomplished.

Day 9 – this is film…

These were the last photos my beloved Rolleiflex took before it broke on Christmas morning. Day9 - HAHtrain-68070005

These photos remind me how much I love that camera.

Day9 - HAHtrain-68070001

And I hope it comes back very soon.Day9 - HAHtrain-6807000168070007So even though these photos were not actually taken today, because they are film, I think they are allowed to break the rules.
