Top Nine of 2018 (no algorithms were used in the making of this list)

000059560010-BetsyBeach2018paigegreenI did the Top Nine photo generator on Instagram, but I didn’t agree with the photos it chose, so I picked my own.057_000048360009These Top Nine (plus one) aren’t photos that other people “liked” best.

JJ-026_000037260010They are not photos that an algorithm deemed worthy enough to show other people.

079_000059800005-SCBeach2018paigegreenThey are not photos that I was hired to take, or that will help get me new jobs.

Ally4-2018000039120004They are photos from my life that I like best.

000059640007-SCBeach2018paigegreenThey are photos that remind me to slow down and make time for my own life.

045_000067360002They are photos that remind me that life is short and I only have one chance to live it.

BookClub000064790010-e-b-w45x5They are all photos taken on film with cameras that quite likely will not give me results that I expected, but they almost always give me photos that I love.

000009470002So here is to a slow new year, ignoring algorithms, being present in our own lives and having experiences that will likely not be what we expect, but will almost always be what we love.

Holy Jenga, the sun came up on a new year. (After 2016, I wasn’t so sure it would.)

But the last thing we need is another blog post about how bad things were in 2016.paigegreenfarmphoto01162012-0010

And less of the shitty for 2017 (unless it’s compost.)000038550010

But there is an extra challenge for me, because entering this new year means entering a new decade. paigegreenmiranda092016film-012

I am not thrilled about my new decade starting the same year that our country offers the potential of nuclear war, or starts burning so many fossil fuels that we cook our way back into a primordial soup.

Oh man, if I didn’t have kids… I would jump off of this doomed life raft so fast…

paigegreenfibershedpastures12142015-114

And jump on to a booze cruise in Mexico, preferably one with lots of milkshakes and tequila.

But thanks to raging hormones that took over my good judgement in my early 30’s,

paigegreenliamiller01312012-043

I now have two small people who I am responsible for.

012-thanksgiving11272016paigegreen

And I desperately want those two people to live in a world where police don’t shoot citizens they were hired to protect, presidents don’t encourage hatred and violence, warlords don’t kill innocent children, and companies don’t destroy the planet or wipe out species for products like ivory, palm oil and shark fins.

So I have lots to do in 2017. The party is over.

Because it is better to solve problems than cry about them (although I have little to no control over my tear ducts thanks to having kids, so crying is probably going to happen regardless.)

But through the tears you may hear our family theme song, “If there’s a problem, yo, I’ll solve it. Check out the hook, while my DJ revolves it.”

And for the real history books (and because I promised to focus on the good)…

My horoscope said so…

Most days I love what I do, but some days I feel like the lonely old peach tree that lives in my backyard that has been sprayed with herbicides. So lately I have been wondering if being a photographer is really the right path for me, or should I be something else… like a vet. (But I can only be a vet who works on healthy animals because just the thought of blood makes the room go black as I start to pass out.)

And then, one week in December, as I was wrapping my Christmas presents with the North Bay Bohemian I read this…

Libra (9/23-10/22) I’m hoping 2010 will be the year you do whatever it takes to fall more deeply in love with the work you do. I’d like to see you reshape the job you have so that it better suits your soul’s imperatives. If that’s not possible, consider looking for or even creating a new job. The cosmos will be conspiring to help you accomplish this. Both hidden and not-so-hidden helpers will be nudging you to earn your livelihood in ways that serve your highest ideals and make you feel at peace with your destiny. – Rob Brezsny, Free Will Astrology.

I haven’t read my horoscope in a really, really long time, and I don’t know Rob Brezsney, but I feel like he read my brain. He heard my doubts and knew I would wrap my presents with his newspaper, so he threw his wise words in front of me and made me think. And he is right, this is the year I have to jump in with both feet or switch pools.

I have been so incredibly lucky in 2009.

I have had so many wonderful opportunities and jobs that have just landed in my lap, and I am grateful for each and every one. I have met amazing people, and been to amazing places, and learned so many amazing things. But this year, I am going to put myself out there and find documentary photography jobs that make me fall more deeply in love with the work I do. Jobs that tell stories about communities, about people making positive change, about people overcoming adversity. Stories that show what it is like to live in the year 2010.

This is my new year’s resolution and it starts now. Here goes everything. (ps: I am going to need those hidden and not-so-hidden helpers so feel free to help away.)

Happy New Year.

A list for Santa (Rosa)….

Both my brother and one of my best friends recently made requests for prints to decorate their homes. Their requests turned into a fun project for me… it’s like cleaning out the closet and trying on a pair of forgotten pants and realizing you love them, and suddenly they become your new favorites.

But the fun part about photos is that not only do they become my new favorites, but I get to share them with other people too. I am making my list and sending my order off to Santa (Rosa,) so if you see something you like… it’s not too late to share the photo spirit this Holiday Season.

My Muse…

…Who may not always be amused to stop for a photo, but in the end he always does, and that is so nice for me. And most importantly he always encourages me on during the roller coaster flips and turns of photography, I recommend everyone have their own cheerleader, even if they prefer sunflowers to pompoms

Taking Time to Play….

As a “professional” photographer, it can get overwhelming photographing all the time… and sometimes the last thing you want to do is take photos during your free time because taking photos means editing photos and that means more time in front of the computer… but playing with your camera is the best way to keep photography fun. So this summer, I tried really hard to balance my computer editing time with my playing time… and what’s better than a cartwheel competition.  Although another important lesson to remember as a photographer… put down the camera and do cartwheels too, or if you can take a photo while you cartwheel, that’s cool, I just haven’t figured out how to do that with the Rollei.

Looking East…

Hello All,

I am about to embark on another adventure… this time I am heading East. First I will be in Greenville, South Carolina, then over to the North Carolina coast, then up to Philadelphia, and finally to New York.

I would love to add some cute families or fun portraits to my itinerary, so if you have a loved one you want photographed, who is somewhere close to one of those places, then please send me an email and I will try and fit you in.

paigephotography@yahoo.com

Thanks and I hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Paige

Two Midwesterners and Their New California Boy….

It’s baby time! Seems like everyone we know is multiplying… which is fun for me.

Meet Michael, the son of two amazingly talented and loving people. When he gets a little bigger he will no doubt: play music, grow vegetables, go to Antarctica, love hiking, and have cute dimples just like his parents. But for now, he is moving to San Diego to start a new life with his parents, and we all wish them the very best.

This was the crib his mom slept in when she was a baby… yay for reusing!

See, you can kind of see that little dimple forming on that big juicy cheek.

The Difference Three Years Can Make….

When I took this photo of my friend Juliet, almost exactly three years ago, it was hard to even imagine how much all of our lives were going to change. We had no idea who that little human inside her belly was going to be, let alone who the the next one was going to be, or that in three years they would move out of this house and Arann and I would move in. Life moves so fast and sometimes you don’t even realize how much things change until you stop and look back.
