No warm-up necessary this year…

This was the third year in a row that I photographed Jasmine and her parents

…which, I learned, makes for a very comfortable and very action-packed photo shoot.

No warm-up time necessary this year, Little Miss Jasmine was ready to go…

And so was I… after spending 72 continuous hours working on getting our new house ready for us to move in to it this week! It is totally chaotic and insane what we are trying to do in such a short amount of time… so this one hour photo shoot, in this perfect location (which happens to be conveniently in my new backyard,) with these ready and willing models… was exactly the boost I needed tonight to keep me going.
And hopefully the next blog post I write will be from my desk, in my new office, in our very own house! Eeeeeeeeeee….. wish us luck!

it is all about people…

I may photograph food, products, events, and flowers… but for me, it is all about the people. So I get excited when family portrait season comes around and families invite me in to their homes for an hour, or even better, for an afternoon, and I get to play…

I enjoy it so much that every time I am at a family photo shoot I usually have to remind myself that it is time to put down the camera and go home. And when I do eventually leave, I feel honored to have been invited in to the homes of these families and to document what their lives are like at this moment… and I can’t believe that I am lucky enough to call this my job.

Somedays it is hard to believe that things will ever be different, but someday we will need to remember…

Remember how Nathaniel always loved his rocking horse…

Remember when you only had one

Remember when Alexander wouldn’t smile for the camera…

Remember when life felt absolutely crazy…

Remember when your arms were sore from always holding someone…

And your bellies were sore from always laughing…

Remember the kisses that squished your cheeks and left slobbery marks that you had to wipe off…

I am so glad that I get to help you remember.

Beauty…

I saw Genevieve last summer while she was working in a cafe near my house and I immediately wanted to photograph her, but I was too shy to ask.

Luckily, my stock photography partner, Jude, also noticed Genevieve when she visited the cafe and she was not shy about asking Genevieve if she would model for our stock photography business, and Genevieve agreed.

I finally got to meet and photograph Genevieve last Wednesday. The three of us went and played in the mud once the rain finally stopped.

It was so much fun to just play.

We played with dresses, with umbrellas, with rain coats, with movement, with cars, with braids, with facial expressions and with lots and lots of mud. Genevieve was such a beautiful model and so much fun…  we can’t wait until it rains again.

Jude and I are always looking for more people to play with us for our stock photography project, so if you would like to join in the fun then please let us know.

How to Work with Different Agendas…

_mg_7670

Parents want family portraits…

_mg_7674

Kids want to climb trees…

_mg_7660

And run…

_mg_7711

And explore…

_mg_7750

So I suggested swinging, and when the swinging stops… then we take the photos…

And when the swinging wears off… then start hanging them upside down…

And when they fall on the ground in excitement…

Everyone falls on the ground in excitement… and there we have our family portrait.

What’s in a Name… (please vote)

Dear Readers,

My stock photography partner, Jude Mooney, and I are in the process of choosing a name for our business. Can you please help us by voting on your favorite name listed below. The competition closes Monday evening at 7pm EST… so please contribute your votes before then. Thanks!!

  • Hazel
  • Jane Photo
  • Jane Harper Photo
  • Green & Greene
  • Sweet Pea & Ragamuffin
  • Rusty Thimble Photo
  • The Greens
  • Hazel Jane
  • Hazel and Jane

The idea behind the some of these names (hazel & jane) is that we are creating an alias- a
mysterious female character.

Another Kelly-ism…

This is only the surface of my latest Kelly, Messy Monkey Founder, photo shoot (you may remember her in the bathtub with eggs)… there is so much more to come from this shoot, but unfortunately we photographed right before I flew away on my current Eastern Adventure… so I haven’t had time to scan the negatives yet or process the digital… but I managed to sneak one negative in before Arann dragged me out the door so I wouldn’t miss my flight.

Kelly has an amazing collection of old-school granny night gowns and she wanted to play in the yard wearing them, and we have this great old horn in our house, which she was excited to play with. It brought her back to her days as drum major in her high school band… her marching form is excellent!

Stay tuned for more Kelly photo shoots.

Taking Time to Play….

As a “professional” photographer, it can get overwhelming photographing all the time… and sometimes the last thing you want to do is take photos during your free time because taking photos means editing photos and that means more time in front of the computer… but playing with your camera is the best way to keep photography fun. So this summer, I tried really hard to balance my computer editing time with my playing time… and what’s better than a cartwheel competition.  Although another important lesson to remember as a photographer… put down the camera and do cartwheels too, or if you can take a photo while you cartwheel, that’s cool, I just haven’t figured out how to do that with the Rollei.
