Happy Birthday to My Favorite Person on the Planet…

He did it.

Arann Harris planned, facilitated and headlined another successful Oysterpalooza, in Valley Ford (click link for more photos.)

After running around taking care of logistics all day long, when it was his turn to play, he still made people dance their feet off and laugh out loud.

It was the best Oysterpalooza yet (there have been three.)

To my love, who hates birthday cards, on your birthday the only thing I have to say is…

Even though all these people love you… no one’s ever gonna love you as much as me.

Come Get Your Dance On and Win Big…

The Green String Farm Band is going all out, in their very best Christmas sweaters, at Murphy’s Irish Pub in Sonoma, tonight, December 20th, at 6 pm.

It promises to be a really good time and very family friendly. Raffle prizes will be given away all night… which means you will have a chance to win your very own bottle of Arann’s homemade, super hot, Strong Sauce, Green String Farm Band t-shirts and CD’s… all of which make great stocking stuffers.

Hope to see you there.

Oysterpalooza 2009… that’s all I need to say…

… but I am going to say more.

What a day of happy people eating fresh local oysters, drinking beer, listening to amazingly good local music, and dancing until they could dance no more. This is one of Arann’s big annual projects that he does in collaboration with the Rocker Oysterfeller’s team. The epic event is not without a lot of work and publicity (which brought more people out this year than ever before and brought some unexpected hurdles like figuring out where to park all those cars.) In the end people were patient and remembered the point of the occasion was to chill out, eat oysters, listen to talented musicians and have a good time, and I think the photos show the mission was accomplished.

It was a super fun day and I can’t wait for 2010. Maybe there will be t-shirts next year… just a suggestion… but who doesn’t want a t-shirt that says Oysterpalooza?

Portrait Practice…

I am trying to do a better job of slowing down and really looking when I take portraits: looking at lines, framing and as always… light.

It is really convenient that I have a built-in model who can really benefit from having fun photos. Arann is always eager to have more photos for his band, The Green String Farm Band. And so when he had a video shoot at the Green String Farm, for the Press Democrat’s Butter and Egg Day promotion, I decided to come along with my Rolleiflex, just in case.

And well, just-in-case, turned into a ‘just-can’t-stop’ obsession. As we were waiting for the film crew to arrive, I just started taking photos… and then I couldn’t stop. Everyone who was in the vicinity became my model, like it or not. Some people multiple times… and some people weren’t people at all.

I was out of color film, and it had been awhile since I concentrated on black and white. For some reason I have been in love with color lately. And so when the fog started to roll in and the diffused the sun combined with the polka-dot and stripe sister duo below, I was really bummed not to have color film.

But after seeing the negatives, I am happy I had to return to the simplicity of black and white film… no distractions, and no relying on color to make the photo… it has to be about the basics and then you can add color… so it’s a good thing I am practicing… lines, framing, light… repeat.

Happy Birthday Chicken Man… I hope your next decade is full of lots of golden egg laying feathered friends and no bobcats.

The honeymoon is over…  and it is back to work for Arann and the Green String Farm Band.

They are getting serious about music and that means… more songs about chickens, a blog, a website, hot sauce, business cards, t-shirts, sweatshirts and very exciting secret musical instruments.

Want to know what the secret musical instrument will be?

Well, I can’t give the secret musical instrument away here… but it is going to be awesome!

Stay tuned to find out the secret very soon.

(Digital photos versus Rolleiflex photos once again. My conclusion between the two: for musical gigs, they both have their benefits.)

Bringing in the New Year…

The Green String Farm Band played at Rocker Oysterfeller’s Speakeasy in Valley Ford on New Year’s Eve. It was an amazing occasion complete with a four-course prohibition era dinner, consisting of classic dishes from the 1920’s and 1930’s created with locally produced ingredients. The costumes were amazing and when combined with the atmosphere inside the historic Dairyman’s Bank (1890), it was easy to forget what year we were bringing in with our celebrations.

If you ever are in need of a fun place to go for dinner, and you are up for an adventure, then you should check out Rocker Oysterfeller’s. The food is phenomenal and they are continously trying new theme nights that make the occasion worth the drive. And as an extra bonus, you can find Arann Harris singing it up out there every Thursday night in 2009.

The Album is Ready…

Remember the album I was talking about a few weeks ago?ah_fllier3

The sound editing is finished, the cd’s have been printed, the cd covers have been screen-printed and cut out by hand, and after their first weekend of gigs with their new cd’s… they have sold 20 so far.

The whole package is definitely an organic work of visual and audio art. No two cd’s are alike… sounds like a good Christmas present to me. You can get a sneak peek of what it sounds like here:
